Have you ever been to “Beautiful Nebraska?” This state at the heart and center of the U.S. is filled with amazing landmarks, historic sites, and unforgettable experiences. As travelers, we believe that the state is a better tourist attraction than the likes of Nevada, California, and Florida. Of course, as this is a large state, we’ll narrow down the list of unforgettable spots into smaller bits. This time, we are going to talk about the largest city in the state which is Omaha, also known as the Gateway to the West. This lush and lively city is arguably one of the places to be in while in Nebraska so read on ahead for a new adventure.

Omaha’s boom into a major city started during 1854 when the city was founded by people from the neighboring area of Council Bluffs, Iowa. The city itself was founded along the Missouri River and a crossing in the area called the Lone Tree Ferry. Because of its accessibility to the west, the city acquired the moniker, Gateway to The West.

One of the key turning points in Omaha’s history was when it held the World’s Fair in 1898. During the event, the city introduced the “new west” to the world. People from all over the U.S. visited Omaha when it hosted the World’s Fair and through it, the city was able to showcase its potential and create ties with others around the U.S.

Another key factor that helped Omaha grow into the bustling city that it is today is its strategic location which puts it at the center of the U.S. During the 19th century, the city became a transportation hub for the U.S. through its railroads and breweries. Then in the following century, Omaha took advantage of its geography and it opened the Omaha Stockyards which was the world’s largest meatpacking plant.

As a tourist attraction, Omaha has everything from historic landmarks to cultural experiences. Its primary source of tourism, however, is the Henry Doorly Zoo and the College World Series. Another major tourist attraction in the city is the Old Market in Downtown Omaha which also serves as an important player in the city’s retail economy.

According to an assessment on the city’s leisure and hospitality sector, Omaha is on the same level as cities like Kansas City, Missouri, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Denver, Colorado, and Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The city is placing more funds on the development of its tourism sector which will further improve the attractions and accommodations in the state.

Now that we’ve gotten a glimpse of the city and its tourism industry, let’s get right down to the things you need to know before exploring the city of Omaha.

How To Get To Omaha

Whether you are coming from major U.S. cities or from international cities, getting directly to Omaha is easy thanks to the Eppley Airfield. This international airport is located three miles away from Downtown Omaha so from it, you can book a taxi or a rental car to get to the city proper.

It handles over 100 flights daily from various airlines such as Air Canada Express, Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Air, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, and more. These will take you to and from the city to major locations around the U.S. and other parts of the world. The top destinations of the airport include Denver, Colorado, Chicago-O’hare, Illinois, and Atlanta, Georgia.

Alternatively, you can also take Amtrak to get to the city. Omaha’s Amtral station is just 0.5 miles away from the city. If you are already near or are in Nebraska, then you may want this option instead as it a lot cheaper. Just be sure to book your tickets early as the trains can get crowded during peak season.

However, do keep in mind that it will be more expensive on your end. Other than renting a car at the airport, there are cheaper and more convenient alternatives as well.

Your best option when it comes to public transportation is the Omaha Metro. This is the city’s own mass transit bus system and it will get you to all of the key spots in the city. It runs on a schedule however, so when it’s late at night, you’ll have to take taxis instead. For the rest of the day, you’ll have no issues getting around using the buses.

Best Time To Visit Omaha, Nebraska

One of the best things about Omaha is that rooms are cheap regardless of the season.
