Before it became the robust resort city that it is today, Palm Springs was first the home of the Cahuilla people nearly 2,000 years ago. The indigenous people remained isolated from other cultures for hundreds of years up until Mexican diarist Jose Maria Estudillo and Brevet Captain Jose Romero first recognized Agua Caliente at Palm Springs. After the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed after the Mexican-American war, Palm Springs become a part of the US in 1848.

The origin of the Palm Springs name could be traced back to the early Spanish explorers that referred to the places as La Palma de la Mano de Dios which translates to The Palm of God’s Hand. However, the Palm Springs name was only used in 1853 by US Topographical Engineers. Before that, some of its early names including Palmetto Spring and Big Palm Springs.

Fast forward to early 1900s, Palm Springs slowly made its transition into becoming a resort city.  Tourists that needed to cure conditions with dry heat began frequenting the area by then as Palm Springs was hot nearly all-year round. However, it is this similar climate and temperature that also turned off some people away from the place and as such, its local population dropped as well.

Naturalist and travel writer George Wharton James described Palm Springs as a place having many great charms and attractiveness. He also said that the place was more comfortable because of its microclimate as the shadow of Mount San Jacinto in the west helped regulate the sunlight and heat easily.

In the following years, more entrepreneurs began laying the foundation of what we see know. Some of the most popular hotels at the time where The Desert Inn in 1909, the Oasis Hotel in 1924 and El Mirador in 1927. These hotels started a great trend in Palm Springs as entrepreneurs began seeing the potential for tourism in it. Before we knew it, Palm Springs was made home to countless hotels and resorts.

If you’re brave enough, riding an ATV to explore the notorious San Andreas Fault is also one of the exciting things to do in Palm Springs.
