The Caribbean is and will always be known as the pristine and top destination for people who are looking for great times and even greater adventures. However, it is such a big area, that it will take you a ton of cash and time to get through each beach. This time we’re looking at one of the best spots in the Dominican Republic. We’re talking about nothing else other than the resort town of Punta Cana within the Punta Cana-Bavaro-Veron-Macao municipal district. Punta Cana gives you the best of both worlds as it has views of both the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic ocean through its beaches and balnearios. Of course, these are just some of the things that you need to see in this top Caribbean tourist destination.

How To Get To Punta Cana

The most popularly used airport in the Punta Cana is the Punta Cana International Airport and this will be your passage to this paradise if you are coming from other parts of the world. This airport is used by over 50 major airlines and it has three terminals. It has flights coming directly from major cities in the U.S.

The second best airport on Punta Cana, if you are coming from far away, is the La Romana Airport. From this airport, you will need to take a 45-minute drive from the top hotels in Punta Cana hotel. This is not a great airport if you are traveling on a budget, however. Most of the flights running through La Romana Airport are charter flights so you’ll have to spend quite a lot if this is your ideal airport. What’s great about chartered flights though is that you run your own schedule at least.

Alternatively, you can also try booking a flight that gets you to the Aeropuerto Internacional de las Americas. It is only a half hour drive away from Santa Domingo which is a bit farther than the Punta Cana International Airport. This airport is a great choice if you want to explore the majority of the Dominican Republic. Punta Cana is an $8 bus ride away from Punta Cana though so that extra trip might be worth it.

Getting Around Punta Cana

Punta Cana isn’t much of a big place so a lot of tourists try to walk around the area instead of taking transportation. Of course, if you want a more relaxed trip around the area, you can try to take the buses or taxis that will take you on a tour around Punta Cana. This is the best way to get around Punta Cana as it will take you closer to the true Dominican Republic culture and its people.

One public form of transportation that is unique to Punta Cana are motoconchos which are basically motorcycle taxis. What’s best about motoconchos is that they are the cheapest rides in Punta Cana at around $2-4 per trip. There are many motoconchos in Punta Cana but be forewarned that there are some drivers who aren’t legal meaning you could get into trouble. While their fares may be cheaper, you are putting yourself at great risk. As a general rule of thumb, you may want to ride with drivers wearing an orange vest as that means that they are sanctioned by the local operating group.

You can also rent cars from the Punta Cana International Airport. However, a lot of tourists are already doing the same so congestion and parking spaces may be a big issue. The best way to avoid such problems is by taking motoconchos or by taking walks instead.

Budget For Punta Cana

Keep in mind that Punta Cana is a tourist destination. That basically means that you may want to save up a lot of money to make your trip worth it. However, if you are smart enough, you can get to and out of this tourist hotspot on a fairly limited budget.

You’ll be spending a lot on your accommodation at Punta Cana. Most of the top hotels are around the beach area. Luxury hotels there will cost you at least $100-125. There are also cheap hotels near the beach which cost around $75. There are some hotels that don’t have ads on hotel booking websites. While these are the cheapest, don’t expect too much on the room. Be sure to book your room several weeks before the trip so you can save big.

As for transportation, it will really depend on what you prefer. If you are inclined on the idea of motoconchos, then you need to give at least $15 per head. If you prefer buses or taxis, the ideal budget is at least $25. If you want to rent a car, you’ll spend $20. This is the best option if you are traveling with a few friends as you can split that $20 between each of you.

For food and drinks, there are countless restaurants and bars within Punta Cana. As expected, you will find the luxury fare over at the shorefront. Luckily, there are many cheap restaurants as well. Ideally, your food budget should be at least $30 per head daily. This will include snacks and drinks and be sure to taste authentic Dominican Republic cuisine while in the area.

Best Time To Visit Punta Cana

According to other travelers, the best time to visit Punta Cana is during the months of March to May. During this time, the peak season for tourists has already passed so there are fewer people and more rooms to book. Although the winter season has just passed, Punta Cana is still relatively warm at around 80 degrees which is an average all throughout the year. Rooms are cheaper as well as hotel owners’ battle for what’s left of the tourists.

If you really want hot weather that’s perfect for sunbathing, the hottest months are August to September during which, the temperatures reach the 87 mark. There are many tourists visiting Punta Cana during these months so have your patience readied by then.

While there are great times to visit, there are months to avoid as well.  The hurricane season is in full swing from June to November. Aside from making the trip very dangerous, you could also face other concerns such as unexpected hotel closures and more. Also, there’s the fact that there’s not much left to do in Punta Cana once a hurricane hits.
